Stunning Modriki Island in Fiji – Filming Location for the Movie Cast Away

Imagine being marooned on a deserted island in the middle of the ocean. This is what we got to do on Modriki Island. For just a few hours, on a beautiful island with white sandy beaches, swaying palm trees and stunning blue sea, we were marooned. No wonder Fiji is a popular location for filming movies. Modriki Island is the location for the filming of the movie “Cast Away” with Tom Hanks and Wilson.

During our stay at Castaway Island Resort in Fiji we took a trip out to Modriki Island. It is located in the Mamanuca Island group, located just off the main island of Fiji.

STUNNING MODRIKI ISLAND

We boarded a speedboat and sped out to Modriki Island.  It was a thirty-five minute ride. Although the weather was fine leaving Castaway Island it started to get cloudy and drizzly as we got closer to Modriki Island. The weather created large swells in the water and choppy conditions with much sea spray. Once we reached Modriki Island, the heavens opened and it started pouring down. We were the only people on our very own “castaway island” in the rain! We all huddled together under one large golfing umbrella which i’d fortuitously decided to bring along as there was no shelter. This was true castaway life. The rain lasted for about twenty minutes and then thankfully, the sun came out.

Someone had spelled out “Help Me” using coconuts on the beach.

Once the sun came out we enjoyed a wonderful picnic lunch.

After lunch we swam in the crystal blue sea and walked along the white sandy beach, enjoying the views. What a beautiful place and only us here!

Logan and Flynn enjoyed being shipwrecked on a deserted island, spear fishing with sticks for fish and collecting coconuts! They very definitely got into the character of Tom Hanks in the Cast Away movie. It was easy to see why this was chosen as the Cast Away filming location

Yes, the water really is that colour! We couldn’t get over how beautiful the colour of the sea was.

HOW TO GET TO MODRIKI ISLAND

The best way to get to Modriki Island is on a trip by speedboat from one of the other islands. Day trips to Modriki Island are possible from Nadi, Fiji and the Mamanuca Island group. Most resorts on the Mamanucas should be able to book a similar tour for you. We booked this tour through our resort, Castaway Island Resort.

There is no accommodation  on the island, so there is no option to stay overnight. In fact this is a true deserted island, so you have to bring all food and drinks with you.

WHERE WE STAYED IN FIJI

We spent ten days at Castaway Island Resort, part of the Mamanuca Islands. On our family world adventure we were typically not resort travellers, but it was in Fiji where we made an exception. Castaway Island Resort was perfect for us, as it is very family friendly. With two swimming pools, long stretches of beautiful beach, water sports, several small restaurants, this place has it all. We were here in low season, in fact during cyclone season, so the resort was only a fraction full.

  • When you went to Modriki Island from castaway island resort did you book the group tour (and lucked out that you were the only people) or did you book a private tour? Thanks we are going to castaway island resort in early May 2019. Also, are there any can’t miss things we should plan on or advice. We will be traveling with our 3 (almost 4 ) year old daughter. Thanks!

    • We booked it with the resort while there and they set it up as just our family. I’d wait and book it while you’re there and that way negotiate with them. It’s more of a ‘castaway’ experience if you get to go on your own as a family group. We didn’t do agreat deal more while at Castaway, but rather spent our days at the resort. It’s a great place to stay for a while!
